Descripció: The idea of CASA (Cultural Analysis Summer Academy) emerged out of discussions about the function of academia in society, and about the role of the academic or intellectual in society. We started to discuss these issues during the year of 2003, a year in which the world system has changed dramatically, or in which changes that had been taking place for some time have become painfully obvious. The war against Iraq has shown the disregard of major world powers for international organizations, institutions and rules that have originally been introduced to protect the human rights of each world citizen, and that sought to attempt to introduce a world order that is governed by mutual agreements and consensus.

Descripció: The issue I would like to raise is the need to challenge the authority of both the researcher and the activist. Is it possible to use a researcher?s critical perspective and insights to question activist agendas and practices and at the same time use the activist?s involvement and commitment to challenge research practices?

Descripció: We can have a cynical attitude in the face of media, and say that nothing can be done about the dollar power that creates itself in images, words, digital communication, and computer systems that invade not just with an invasion of power, but with a way of seeing the world, how they think the world should look… Or we can simply assume incredulity: we can say that any communication by the media monopolies is a total lie… But there is a third option… that is to construct a different way, to show the world what is really happening, to have a critical world-view and to become interested in the truth of what happens to the people who inhabit every corner of this world.

Descripció: Unir la reflexión a la acción en los programas de política social y dar cabida en ellos a los propios "necesitados", como principales protagonistas, puede ser un camino para superar estos puntos ciegos. Como se ha demostrado en la práctica, tal actitud se convierte en motor de un proceso transformador capaz de movilizar los recursos y la capacidad de pensar y actuar -sin recortes previos- de las personas afectadas por las diversas formas de exclusión.
